This semester, our group focused on getting the word out about Battlefield Farm, helping people learn about their mission to combat food deserts in Knoxville. We spent time on Ped Walkway tabling and talking with students, answering questions, and sharing why the Battlefield Farm matters. Outside of that, we reached out by texting friends and family, posting on Instagram, and sharing on Facebook to spread awareness even further. We used in person conversations and social media to connect more people to Battlefield Farm and its mission, ultimately reaching our goal of raising awareness. Below are our favorite experiences from this semester!
Reagan: My favorite part of crowdfunding this semester was doing the Ped Walkway event. I thought it was a cool idea to let students spin a wheel and win a snack without having to pay, just in exchange for listening to us talk about Battlefield Farms mission. It made it easy to start conversations and get people engaged. I also think it is really important for more students to be aware of what is happening in the Knoxville area, especially when it comes to food deserts and access to healthy food.
Walker: I enjoyed my conversations with my friends about Battlefield Farms and more broadly raising awareness about food deserts and their local impact on Knoxville. Because of my Instagram story, one of my friends and I talked about their mission, leading him to ask how he and his fraternity could volunteer in the future. This was a fulfilling experience because it went beyond raising money to a more tangible impact of giving time to Mr. Battle and his mission.
Landon: Although crowdfunding this semester has brought on unexpected events and challenges, it was a pleasant experience overall. Getting out and talking to people isn’t usually my expertise; however, participating in the Ped-Walk event and engaging with people, even outside the event, about the organization was a great step. After speaking with my mother and others from my small hometown, it was interesting to see how people realize that they take the availability of produce for granted. Knoxville is the heart of East Tennessee, serving as a vibrant center of culture and community. When I was a child, weekend trips with my parents to Knoxville were a cherished tradition, filled with dining out and exploring local activities. We must work together to keep it in its best form for future generations.
Atleana: My favorite part of crowdfunding this semester was connecting with Mr. Chris Battle to learn more about his work at Battlefield Farm. I really enjoyed visiting the farm and community gardens, where I was able to see more of the greater Knoxville community. Listening to his stories about how Battlefield Farm came to be and how provision of fresh produce impacted the lives of individuals allowed me to connect with their mission on a deeper level.
